![]() ![]() The book does read like a mystery novel at times, as Maomao figures out more about the reasons behind various incidents, some of which tie in to events later in the book, so just because one “mystery” is solved doesn’t mean it is completely out of the picture. ![]() This does make her ideal for her eventual job as poison tester to one of the consorts, but also gives her a curious streak that gets her involved in all sorts of incidents, as well as draws the attention of the beautiful “eunuch” Jinshi. She’s also quite the “mad scientist” who likes personally testing poisons and seeing their effects and how much she can handle of them. ![]() The protagonist, Maomao, is a teenage girl and apothecary worker in a red-light district that had been kidnapped and sold into service in the rear palace. It features a unique setting inspired by a historic Chinese imperial palace, complete with consorts, eunuchs, internal politics, and people of varying levels of morality. ![]() This is quite a different light novel from what we’re used to seeing. ![]() ![]() As could be expected of a good thriller, most of its characters are flawed, and the prime suspect is so obviously guilty that there has to be a sub plot, and of course there is. I had read a readers comment that said “The presumed killer is completely crazy and the journalist is no better!” Which I would consider a fair comment.įirst of all this is a long book 600 pages, but 600 pages of guilty pleasure (well it is a thriller). So this week I went back to one of his earlier page-turners that has not been translated into English ‘La Ligne Noire’ or ‘The Black Line’ published in French in 2004, considered by some as his best book, “Somewhere in South East Asia between the Tropic of Cancer and the equator, there is another line, a black line, marked out by dead bodies and fear” Grangé has sold more than 3.5 million books in France and more than 5 million world wide. ![]() ![]() Grangé is ‘the’ French thriller writer, many of his works have been filmed, most famously ‘The Crimson Rivers’ featuring Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Series Editor And Registered Nurse Harriet Foreman Was Inspired By And Remains A Devoted Fan Of Cherry Ames: "".I Was Going To Follow In Her Footsteps And Become A Nurse-Nothing Else Would Do."" She talks of the wives and partners of the accused who sat quietly during the trial, listening at times to horrendous details of the crimes committed, and she wondered how they coped with their relationships and their lives once the trial was over. It is the first novel of Fiona Barton, a journalist who worked with a number of British newspapers, and she tells in the prologue how her reporting of some criminal trials acted as the inspiration for this novel. ![]() The Widow has been heralded as the stand-out psychological thriller for 2016 in the same vein as Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train and while it may not be as accomplished as either of those two titles, it is an unusual and gripping story that is well worth listening to. ![]() ![]() The Widow by Fiona Barton – Audible Book Review by Pat V. ![]() ![]() So I rendered my judgment: Divorce Denied. The whole supernatural situation is well constructed and the worldbuilding supreme. I really appreciated that there was layer upon layer of intricacies within the plot. She comes to Lockwood & Co hoping for a job fighting ghosts - but will get much more than she bargained for at the small agency. Young Lucy is especially talented but an unfortunate incident has left her with no means of employment. Only the young can see/sense/fight them but the spectral visitors are returning in numbers - creating "The Problem" for modern England. Story: For 50 years, ghosts have been a problem for England. I was never interested in supernatural/ghost stories but this really does rise above the genre. Characters are nuanced, the plot intriguing, mysteries build upon mysteries, and there is an overall story arc that will take several books to slowly uncover. ![]() ![]() Lockwood and Co is a rare animal: a thoroughly enjoyable middle grade story that has the depth and interest to appeal to all ages, especially adults. ![]() ![]() ![]() We might come out of reading a work of fiction just that much more willing to believe that that guy over there is as real as we are, and a little more interested in how things seem to him. Out there, inside all of those other bodies, are consciousnesses who also think they are the only real consciousnesses. We aren’t stuck in us-or don’t have to be. The magical lesson is that our mind is a malleable, temporary thing. We imaginatively inhabit another person (the character) through the language of another person (the author), and yet it all feels real and vital-as if it’s happening to us. ![]() ![]() Reading fiction coaches us in understanding that this isn’t the case. When a person is walking around in a human body (as people tend to do, ha ha), it feels like whatever consciousness is arising is the only one. What does reading fiction have to do with empathy? I was a different person when I was done. She moved my mind into a hyper-compassionate state. Toni Morrison somehow reawakened that whole mindset in me-she reminded me that everyone and everything is sacred. ![]() The “alteration” had something to do with feeling an intense identification with the main character, which shot me right back to Catholic school, when I was feeling real empathy for and connection with everybody, inspired by what I imagined Jesus was all about. I remember reading The Bluest Eye for the first time, when our kids were little. ![]() ![]() ![]() I had an inkling of who the guilty parties might be, but the story was still good. The author is Peter Berresford Ellis (writing under the name Peter Tremayne) who is a noted British historian and he includes some great historical details. This is the second book in the series, set in the seventh century and following the mystery solving Irish religious Sister Fidelma and her sidekick and amour, the Saxon Brother Eadulf. Overall, I enjoy the Sister Fidelma series. ![]() ![]() But more deaths must follow before Fidelma is finally able to put together the strange jigsaw in this tale of evil and vengeance. So he invites Sister Fidelma of Kildare and Brother Eadulf to investigate. Bishop Gelasius realizes that Wighard's murder could lead to war between the Saxon and Irish kingdoms if Ronan is accused without independent evidence. There is also a matter of missing treasure: the goodwill gifts Wighad had brought with him to Rome and the priceless chalices sent for the Holy Father Vitalian's blessings have all been stolen. Although the Irish monk denies responsibility, Bishop Gelasius is convinced the crime is political and that Wighard was slain in pique at the triumph of the pro-Roman Anglo-Saxon clergy in their debate with the pro-Columba Irish clergy at Whitby. The solution to this terrible crime appears simple, as the palace guards have arrested Brother Ronan Ragallach as he fled from Wighard's chamber. ![]() Wighard, archbishop designate of Canterbury, has been discovered garrotted in his chambers in the Lateran Palace in Rome in the autumn of AD 664. ![]() ![]() You might start off with Tommy speaking on something and then it catches Sixx around the same topic and so forth. ![]() The 448 page book is broken up into chapters that are lined out by each individual member. By now it’s safe to assume that most fans of the band have seen the VH1 episode of “Behind The Music” which delved into their chaotic history but since it’s only a one-hour program how can it do anything more than touch upon some of the most famous points. ![]() Truly Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil and Mick Mars were Rock Stars to the very essence of the word. It makes sense when you consider the often turbulent history of Motley Crue themselves for as a band their music was as volatile as their offstage personalities. ![]() If you were to take all of the musical tomes available today you will find that this one will stand out substantially higher than the rest of them.
